¿Cómo y cuándo empezaste a hacer arte?

I’m so glad I get to share with you an interview from which I learned a lot, I think that Ash is such an interesting person and an amazing artist. I spent a whole afternoon just studying and appreciating her art to get the selection that I’d share here in the blog but I would have liked to spent many more afternoons because it inspired me a lot and I hope it does the same for you. Do not hesitate to comment questions you think would be interesting to ask in following interviews. Thank you for reading!

Hiya Ash! Thank you so much for this interview, as you know I’m a big fan of your work.

Where were you born? Do you still live there? Would you like to live somewhere else?
I was born in a City-State in Southeast Asia called Singapore. I still live there, it’s very safe and very clean. I’d love to have a chance to station myself overseas for a month or two just to learn new things. But otherwise I’m happy with being here.

How old are you?
I’m 26, turning 27 this year!

How and when is it that you got into Art?
I think I was a bit of a late bloomer, only having gotten into art proper at the age of 23. I was recovering from a terrible breakup and doodling and drawing my feelings really helped me to get over that. Now that I look back, the breakup might’ve been a blessing because it led me to what I love.

What are the things that you liked to do when you were a child?
I loved reading, especially about myths, legends and history all around the world. I’d often imagine what I’d do if I lived in a certain historical period or if I was a character in a certain myth. I think I live in my imagination more than I did in real life when I was a child!

Did you go to college/uni, if so what did you major in?
I have a Diploma in Communications and Media Management, a Diploma in Translation and a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. Though not related to art, these experiences helped shape me as I am today!

I saw in your instagram profile that you do Illustration, copywriting and content management. Which one would you say fulfills you the most and why? Or maybe they fulfill you in different ways? How?
They serve me in different ways! Illustration fills my soul with happiness. While my day job in content and copywriting helps give me the peace of mind to explore my creative side without worrying too much about finances They also serve as other places where I can exercise my creativity and explore new areas, like Audio, Tech and manufacturing!

What is the process that you usually have when elaborating an illustration?
I’ll collect pose references and cool ideas on pinterest and through the things I see everyday (I have an album full of pictures I’ve taken of random things I want to remember). I then draw my central figure and add elements around her. It is a very loose process so my emotions will affect my personal work every step of the way. But that also means I never quite know what the finished piece will look like.

Who and/or what are your biggest inspirations when coming up with ideas for your illustrations?
I gain inspiration from mythology, folktales and culture. Especially from Asia, sometimes a friend from another culture will tell me an interesting story that sticks in my head too! Two artists I really love are James Jean and Shimizu Yuko, who also include elements of tradition in their work!

When making traditional art, what is your favorite medium to work with?
Colour pencils for sure! I love how free you can be with them!

What is it that you like and don’t like about digital art?
I love the convenience of digital art. My commute to work is 3 hours each day and my Ipad helps me survive the duration. I’m also able to experiment with different looks and finishes without having to buy extra art tools. Which can get expensive very quickly! That said, I still set aside some evenings and my weekends for pencil sketches, I almost feel like my sketches are more human and emotionally closer to my than the work I do on my ipad.

Studying your instagram feed I see that you first started out with a different style from what you’re doing right now. Do you have any advice for beginner artists (like me haha) that struggle to find their style?
I promise it will come to you! The great thing about smaller artists like us is that nobody expects us to draw a certain way or in a certain style. So there’s really no need to rush yourself into finding a style and sticking to it. As you strive to become better and expose yourself to more works and colours, your style will become a reflection of yourself and the things you love to draw!

If you haven’t mentioned it before, what kind of music do you listen to that inspires you to draw?
I listen to Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese indie pop and rock! Sometimes Vocaloid and Anisong too, especially when I’m feeling nostalgic.

What is a project that you’ve been wanting to do for a long time but haven’t been able to for whatever reason, maybe you’re busy right now or the opportunity hasn’t come up yet?
I hope to make some of my work into designer toys one day! Creating in 2D is fun but I think it’s going to be amazing to make something beautiful in 3D.

What has been your favorite project so far?
I love the personal collaborations I do with other artists. In March I did a photo x illustration collab with a photographer (IG: rbr_75) and I recently also released a shirt design I really liked! My partner’s brother (IG: brandongoo) also collaborated on the shoot and the resulting shots were pretty amazing! I’m a very cautious person so collaborations like these help me go beyond my comfort zone little by little and give me the courage to try wilder things in the future.

You also have a youtube channel related to audio, What is it about the audio world that got you to do a youtube channel?
Audio is my day job! When I entered the industry 4 years ago, I didn’t know anything about audio. But since I had to market audio products, I thought that it was only right and respectful that I sincerely try to get into the hobby. Eventually I started enjoying it so much that I started a Youtube channel separately from the company channel! I’m surprisingly a lot more tongue-tied when it comes to talking about art, but I hope to have some illustration content there one day!

In your art and characters I usually see the beauty of strenght, innocence and vulnerability but, What are the main concepts that you portray in your art?
It’s exactly that! A lot of my characters are feminine, just like myself. Seeing the world through feminine lenses causes me to go through life in a certain way. And I wanted to touch on concepts of soft strength, beauty, wisdom and mystery. Things that those with a feminine side can tap into for comfort and support. Brute force doesn’t always work.

Do you have any current or upcoming projects that you would like to share with us?
I might actually be able to get cracking on the designer toy project very soon! There’ll also be more shirts in the works so stay tuned for that! Other than these, this year’s going to be dedicated to growing, changing and expanding my style and visual vocabulary—I’d love it if you could watch me grow.

Thank you so much for your time!
